My name is Garrett Austin King. I have a master of education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.  I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (#72587) for the great state of Texas! I have had the privilege of working as a counselor in a community MHMR, inpatient psychiatric hospital, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and Memorial Hermann Health Systems. My work in these areas has been based around crisis situations, trauma histories, and solution-focused work to overcome individual concerns.

As a young child, I was diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) and my family was placed in a particular situation while being told that I would not survive and, with less than a one percent chance of survival, if I did I wouldn’t be able to do things on my own. The details of what, not only I went through, but my family went through were the pieces of the puzzle that drove me into the helping profession. Seeing a world where there was a lack of support for all parties involved really struck a chord with me and has influenced me over my lifetime. As a counselor, I strive to be a beacon of hope and guidance for individuals struggling with any and all types of trauma, life stressors, or daily struggles that influence one’s mental health. Trauma can come in all shapes and sizes, from early childhood experiences, the passing of loved ones, and even extreme circumstances in which we were not prepared to endure and I am a strong believer that there is nothing the mind can’t accomplish or overcome when we put in the work to deal with our trials and tribulations.

My approach to counseling is solely client-focused. I want to work with you where you are, explore your goals, and assist you in achieving success in whatever area you feel you’d like to work on. My solution-focused approach puts you at the forefront of this journey in which I work side-by-side with you to assist you in flourishing. I have experience in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, suicidality, grief, and general life stressors. I have recently received training in EMDR to help clients process different forms of trauma and assist them in minimizing triggers to their trauma experiences.

Outside of counseling, I spend as much time as I can with my wife, Shelby, and our two Goldendoodles, Luna (16 months) and Astro (four months), going on adventures throughout Houston. We enjoy doing as much as we can outside from hiking, kayaking, traveling to different cities, and gaining new experiences from the world. Family is important in my life and I try to never take life for granted.
